FRIENDS OF THE ODU LIBRARIES HONOR OSAMA KANDIL

The Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries presented their 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award on April 8 to Osama Kandil, professor and eminent scholar of aerospace engineering. The honor was bestowed at the organization's 17th Annual Author Dinner, held at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.

The dinner featured guest speaker Michael Pearson, ODU professor of creative writing and noted author. His talk was titled "Innocents Abroad Again - How Travel Leads to Home."

Kandil joined the ODU faculty in 1978. In recognition of his consistent contributions in research and its wide impact, he was selected as an eminent scholar in 1990. The founding chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in 1993, Kandil led the department until 2002.

He is an expert in computational and theoretical fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, and subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows. Government agencies and the military have awarded him more than $4 million in research grants, and he has authored more than 179 refereed journal and conference proceeding papers.

Kandil is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics associate fellow and the recipient in 2005 of a NASA "Turning Goals into Reality" award for outstanding contributions to sonic boom research.

The certificate presented to him at the April 8 dinner reads in part: "Therefore, for his lifetime achievements in teaching and research, and his significant service to the university, to his profession and the body of knowledge in his field, the Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries are honored to give their 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award to Dr. Osama A. Kandil."
