BCET FACULTY RECEIVE UNIVERSITY RECOGNITIONS
Steve Hsiung, associate professor of electrical engineering technology in Batten College, has been named as recipient of the Provost's Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor for 2010-11.
Hsiung, who has mentored 10 undergraduate students over the past six years, all from diverse backgrounds, receives a cash award of $1,000 and a certificate, both of which will be presented at the Faculty Awards and Retirement Dinner on May 3.
While teaching courses in digital circuits and microprocessors, microprocessor-based design, fundamentals of electrical technology and linear electronics, Hsiung has exposed students to applied research methodologies, educating them to write technical papers and present research results.
Many of those research results have been posted on industrial partner websites.
"As a result of Dr. Hsiung's efforts, several conference and journal publications have been produced, and have positively enhanced students' academic resumes, thereby leading to successful employment," said Oktay Baysal, dean of the Batten College.
"In addition to the above highlights, Dr. Hsiung is successful in competitive NSF (National Science Foundation) funding for support of his undergraduate research and teaching, which ultimately benefits our engineering students as well as the institutional research activities."
The Provost's Award was created to recognize and show appreciation for the research mentorship efforts of ODU faculty members.
What is more, Hsuing joins his BCET compatriot, Dr. David Basco, in earning Teaching with Technology Awards bestowed by the University. The Teaching with Technology Award is a means to recognize the excellence of Old Dominion's faculty and their innovative contributions to the quality of teaching and learning through the application of information technology. The Award honors each awardee with $3,000 to be used to purchase computer equipment, software or conference travel.
