Tuleya will Present Hurricane Forecasting Seminar at CCPO

Robert Tuleya, a NOAA visiting scientist at ODU's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography, will discuss his work on the United States' latest Hurricane Weather and Research Forecast (HWRF) system, at a CCPO seminar Monday, March 21.

The seminar begins at 3:30 p.m. in Room 33200 of Innovation Research Park Building 1 in University Village. A reception with refreshments will begin at 3. Both are free and open to the public.

Tuleya joined ODU after he retired in 2002 from NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), where he served as head of the Hurricane Dynamics Group. He worked in the 1990s to develop the GFDL hurricane model, and since then has been involved in the creating and upgrading the latest HWRF model. The National Weather Service began implementing the HWRF system in 2007.

At ODU as an adjunct professor and self-supporting research professional, Tuleya has continued to work on contract with NOAA. Altogether, he has devoted nearly 40 years of his career to devising computer models that predict tropical storm formation, intensity and movement of present day storms and investigating the impact of climate change on tropical storms in the future.
