One Interview by ODU's Atkinson Starts a 'Snowball' of News Reports
Old Dominion University professors often can be heard talking about their research and scholarship on the radio show "With Good Reason," which airs on public radio stations in Virginia and Washington, D.C. But the potential impact of this academic outreach was never before as apparent as it was this week after the broadcast of a "With Good Reason" interview with ODU oceanographer Larry Atkinson.
The interview focused on Atkinson's leadership of the Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative at ODU. After the run cycle of the show began early this week, station WAMU at American University in Washington excerpted a substantial portion of Atkinson's comments for a segment of its own, which also included comments about sea level rise by Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim. That news report can be heard at WAMU Report.
After the WAMU report was broadcast, an editorial writer for The Washington Post penned a "Post Partisan" online commentary article based on the Atkinson interview on "With Good Reason." That article is at Washington Post Report.
"It snowballed," Atkinson said. "But it was good to share the news about the climate change and sea level rise focus that we have among researchers in various disciplines at ODU."
"With Good Reason" is produced for the Virginia Higher Education Broadcasting Consortium by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and is broadcast in partnership with public radio stations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
