'Green on Screen' Film Series Opens March 28

Old Dominion University's Go Green Committee and Center for Service and Civic Engagement will present "Green on the Screen," a programming and film series that not only supports the university's sustainability efforts, but also its mission to provide students with opportunities to participate in artistic, educational, social and cultural programs.

Two documentary films will be screened for the series: "No Impact Man" on Monday, March 28, and "The Cove" on Monday, April 11. Both films will be shown at 6 p.m. in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center. The screenings are free and open to the public.

"No Impact Man" (2009) follows a Manhattan family that abandons its high-consumption lifestyle and spends a year making a net-zero impact on the environment. Winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, "The Cove" follows an elite team of activists, filmmakers and free divers in Japan as they highlight the issues of mass dolphin kills and the risks of mercury poisoning from seafood.

The series' overall goals include raising awareness of individual, community and global environmental impacts; assisting students in formulating sustainable practice and developing possible solutions; providing avenues for students to give back to the community; and raising awareness of social justice issues.

The ODU Go Green Committee, housed in the Division of Student Affairs, is designed to foster a synergistic effort throughout the campus community whereby active, experiential and collaborative learning and real-world problem solving are the norm.
