APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS

PATRICIA HENTOSH, professor of medical laboratory and radiation sciences, appointed a member of the American Fellowships Review Panel of the National Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Washington, D.C. The Fellowships Panel reviews and evaluates applications for funding from women scholars for their postdoctoral research studies and from female doctoral candidates to complete their research dissertation writing. Membership on the panel is a 2½-year appointment. She also was selected to be a participant in an American Association of University Women-sponsored research delegation to Havana, Cuba, last November. The trip was approved by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control. The delegation of 45 women from 20 states focused on gender equity and the role of women in Cuba, and met with female leaders in the Cuban educational system, the arts, politics and law - including Mariela Castro Espin, President Raul Castro's daughter.

ANNA STARTZELL, assistant director for communications, Office of International Programs, selected for the Colonial Academic Alliance's Global Education Visiting Professionals Program. The program allows staff members to broaden their knowledge while in residence for two to three days at a member campus. Startzell will visit the Office of International Programs at Drexel University later this semester to observe the operation of the office, share expertise and develop an ongoing dialogue about best practices in international education.

AWARDS

GIANLUCA DE LEO, assistant professor of medical laboratory and radiation sciences, a certificate of appreciation from the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission in recognition of his "excellent creativity and innovative production … toward making the Hampton Roads Special Needs Get Prepared iPhone Application and Get Prepared Video a synergistic success and demonstrating his continued commitment to improving the quality of life for those with medical and functional needs."

GAIL GRISETTI, associate professor of physical therapy, selected by Inside Business as a 2011 Health Care Hero honoree for her work with Physicians for Peace. She will be honored at a breakfast on Feb. 22 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

ATIYA JACKSON, residence hall director, Housing and Residence Life, a national award for Outstanding Contribution to Multicultural Education from the Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs of the American College Personnel Association. The award will be presented at ACPA's annual convention in Baltimore on March 26. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., at the National Center for Higher Education, ACPA is the leading comprehensive student affairs association that advances student affairs and engages students for a lifetime of learning and discovery.

SHIMON SHETREET, former visiting professor of Jewish Studies and Dragas Professor of International Studies (fall 2010), awarded the 2010 International Jurists Award for maintaining the highest standards of legal education. The award ceremony took place Dec. 11, 2010, at the International Conference of Jurists in New Delhi, India. Shetreet is a professor of international and public law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

ISAO ISHIBASHI, professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Hemanta Hazarika, a professor at Kyushu University in Japan, "Soil Mechanics Fundamentals" (CRC Press, December 2010).

PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS

JIM BLANDO, assistant professor of community and environmental health, "Evaluation of KI Prophylaxis and Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Among the General Public and Emergency Responders," a plenary talk at the 5th Annual Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise Workshop in Washington, D.C. Co-authors C. Robertson and E. Bresnitz were with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services at the time of the project. Both physicians are now with private companies, Sanofi Pasteur and Merck, respectively. The talk was also web cast to HHS stakeholders and the general public. The authors published three papers on the topic.

DANIEL DAUER, professor and eminent scholar of biological sciences, a keynote address, " A Worldwide Overview of Integrative Tools and Methods to Assess Ecological Integrity in Estuarine Ecological Systems," at the meeting of the Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. He also co-hosted with Spanish and French colleagues a session of talks concerning indicators of coastal ecosystem health at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea meeting in Nantes, France.

PUBLICATIONS

GARRETT HALTIWANGER, doctoral student in engineering management, "Understanding the Relationship Between Risk Management and Knowledge Management: A Literature Review and Extension" in vol. 4, no. 3 of International Journal of Knowledge Management Studies. Co-authors are RAFAEL LANDAETA, associate professor, ARIEL PINTO, assistant professor, and ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor, engineering management and systems engineering.
