James Zumwalt, Author of Book on Vietnam War, to Give Free Lecture Feb. 8
War is not always black and white. The Vietnam War left an indelible mark on America. Retired Lt. Col. James G. Zumwalt, who served in the war as a Marine infantry officer, will address those truths during a free public lecture Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Old Dominion University's Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
His talk, sponsored by Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries, will begin at 7 p.m. in Chandler Recital Hall.
More than three decades after the fall of Saigon, Zumwalt believes it is time to better understand the enemy we fought in Vietnam and the role their "iron will" played in its outcome. He will share the personal experiences of the men and women who epitomized this will; empowering them to live, fight, endure and prevail in their war with America.
Zumwalt, who also served in the 1989 intervention into Panama and in Desert Storm, is the author of the 2010 book "Bare Feet, Iron Will," which contains stories never before told from the "other side" of Vietnam's battlefields, as revealed in hundreds of personal interviews with enemy veterans and their war diaries.
He also writes extensively on foreign policy and defense issues, and his articles have appeared in newspapers, magazines and professional journals. On several occasions, his work has been cited by members of Congress and entered into the Congressional Record.
In addition to his writing and speaking engagements, he heads a security-consulting firm named after his late father, Elmo Zumwalt, Admiral Zumwalt & Consultants Inc. Zumwalt's father, who was nominated by President Richard Nixon as the 19th chief of naval operations in 1970, earlier served as Commander Naval Forces, Vietnam, and Chief of the Naval Advisory Group, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam.
