Diehn Concert Features Ensemble Galilei, NPR's Neal Conan and Norfolk Chamber Consort

Old Dominion University's Diehn Concert Series and the Norfolk Chamber Consort will present their third collaborative project Monday, Feb. 14, when Ensemble Galilei joins National Public Radio's Neal Conan and the consort, directed by ODU's Andrey Kasparov, for a multisensory Valentine's Day program. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.

Ensemble Galilei will perform early, contemporary and ethnic works accompanied by images from the Hubble space telescope and poetry readings performed by Conan. The concert will also include premieres of works specifically created for period instruments by composers Christopher book, Stephen Coxe, Johanna Groot Bluemink and Kasparov.

The women comprising Ensemble Galilei are noted for their classical and folk music training. Mixing the colors and styles of early instruments with Celtic traditions, the group is equally at home with Irish reels, medieval cantigas and English country dance tunes.

As noted in a review by the Ottawa Citizen: "Aside from the ensemble's good musicianship and wonderful way with the myth-evoking, gentle melancholy of Celtic music, the most striking feature was the obvious pleasure the players took in what they were doing."

Diehn Concert Series tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for ODU students. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Arts and Letters box office, located in the University Theatre lobby, or by calling 683-5305. The box office is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets also are available at the door one hour before each performance.

The University Theatre is located on Hampton Boulevard between 46th and 47th streets. Free parking is available in the 45th Street garage. Metered street parking is also available.

An endowment established at The Norfolk Foundation, made possible by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. F. Ludwig Diehn, funds this program.
