Social Media in the Classroom Is Topic for Next 'Provost's Conversations' Series

Yuping Liu-Thompkins, associate professor of marketing, and Kyle Nicholas, lecturer of communication and theatre arts, will be the next Old Dominion University faculty members to speak as part of the Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning series.

Hosted by Provost Carol Simpson and the Center for Learning Technologies, the series features many of ODU's award-winning faculty members. Liu Thompkins and Nicholas' presentation, "Learning Beyond the Classroom: Engaging Through Social Media," will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, in room 1202 of the E.V. Williams Engineering and Computational Sciences Building. All faculty members are invited to attend.

Participants at the session will have a chance to engage in a lively conversation about the various ways in which online social media can be incorporated into the teaching process, with real classroom examples provided by the conversation leaders.

Liu-Thompkins and Nicholas will also address the question: What are the advantages and pitfalls of using social media in teaching? The conversation will explore the horizons of new media for college educators, offering recent experiences using Facebook, Twitter and other social media in class.

Conversations on Teaching and Learning is designed to provide faculty members from across the campus with the opportunity to share, think and reflect on a wide range of teaching and learning issues, according to Simpson.
