ODU Counseling Program Students Honored Nationally for Fourth Consecutive Year
Stephanie Crockett, a doctoral candidate in counseling at Old Dominion University, was selected recently as a national Fellow for the 2011 Chi Sigma Iota International (CSI) Leadership Fellowship and Internship Program. CSI is the international honor society for professional counselors, counselor educators and students.
Crockett is one of only 10 individuals who were chosen for this national designation. The program is designed to assist graduate counseling students and professionals in the early years of their careers develop leadership skills for the benefit of the counseling profession. Previous Fellows include ODU alumni Rebekah Byrd (2010), Kelly Emelianchik-Key (2009), Amanda Healey (2009) and Katherine Moore (2008).
Crockett will also receive the 2011 CSI Outstanding Doctoral Student award. Healey received this honor in 2009.
Another doctoral student in counseling, Elizabeth Prosek, was selected as the 2011 Outstanding Service to the Chapter award recipient. This award recognizes an individual CSI chapter member who has excelled in scholarship, service to the chapter and extracurricular involvement, and who demonstrates excellence and commitment.
In previous years, two ODU students were also recognized in other CSI award categories: Anita Neuer, a doctoral counseling candidate, received the Outstanding Practitioner-Supervisor award in 2010 and alumna Sherry Todd received the Outstanding Practitioner award in 2009.
"I am pleased that ODU's counseling program, through its membership in this national honor society, keeps winning awards year after year. Since its inception in 2007 and awards applications in 2008, our Omega Delta chapter of Chi Sigma Iota International has received numerous awards," said Danica Hays, chair of ODU's Department of Counseling and Human Services.
"I congratulate our 2011 recipients, Stephanie and Elizabeth, as well as previous honorees. We are impressed by how well they represent ODU and the Department of Counseling and Human Services," Hays added.
Provost Carol Simpson echoed Hays' sentiment, saying, "Students and faculty alike can be proud to be part of such a strong and nationally recognized program. What a truly great achievement."
The mission of Chi Sigma Iota is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling. CSI has more than 13,000 members worldwide.
