ECE'S BAUMGART INVITED TO LECTURE AT INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM IN TOKYO

Helmut Baumgart, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, has been invited to give a lecture at the Third International Global Center of Excellence (GMSI) Symposium, hosted by the University of Tokyo.

Baumgart, who works at Old Dominion's Applied Research Center (ARC) in Newport News, will present his lecture, "Template Replication - A Versatile Toolbox for Nanotechnology Engineering with Applications in Photovoltaics, Microelectronics and Microfluidics," on March 3.

Baumgart is one of three professors from American universities invited to lecture at the "Designing the Future by Multiscale Engineering" conference. Researchers from the Netherlands and New Zealand are also presenting, along with a handful of Japanese experts in the field.

Shinobu Yoshimura, a professor of systems engineering in the University of Tokyo's School of Engineering, extended a personal invitation to Baumgart and is paying for his trip, citing Baumgart's expertise in a wide range of fields, including microelectronics, microfluidics and engineering at the nano scale.

Oktay Baysal, dean of the Batten College, said it's understandable why Baumgart's research expertise has been recognized. "This is entirely representative of the commitment made by Helmut and other faculty at ARC, and at Old Dominion University, to do research on the nanoscale. Congratulations are certainly in order."
