Broderick Selected to Chair VCIC Humanitarian Awards Dinner

Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick will serve as dinner chair for the Tidewater chapter of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' 47th Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner.

A past recipient of the VCIC's Humanitarian Award, Broderick will play a lead role in honoring organizations and individuals who have made significant humanitarian contributions to the South Hampton Roads community.

The dinner will be held Thursday, March 31, at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.

Broderick was named the eighth president of Old Dominion in May 2009, after serving in an acting capacity for one year.

As president, Broderick guides the university's six colleges, more than 10 economic development and research centers, and numerous partnerships with government and business organizations and agencies. He oversees an operating budget of $441.3 million and more than 2,500 faculty and staff members.

During his tenure, Broderick commissioned a university-wide enrollment management study that has resulted in a plan to integrate all of ODU's programs, practices, policies and planning to achieve optimal future enrollment and growth. Additionally, ODU created its 2009-2014 Strategic Plan, which will position the university to further develop its growing research reputation, enhance its residential campus, and strengthen its partnerships and contributions to the region.

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities promotes understanding and respect on all issues of diversity for all age groups throughout Virginia. Since 2005, the number of programs VCIC conducts has increased by 200 percent. Locally, the organization offers educational programs to students and teachers in both Norfolk and Virginia Beach Public Schools, in addition to a number of independent schools in Hampton Roads.

ODU also partners with VCIC to host various youth programs.
