APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
JIM NEFF, professor of community and environmental health, designated as a Fellow in the American Academy of Health Behavior, a national entity promoting research and scholarship in health promotion, health behavior and health education. Fellow status recognizes achievements in research in publication, external research funding and contributions to the field of health behavior.
NORA NOFFKE, associate professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, selected as an associate member of the Australian Center for Astrobiology. The association works with NASA and the European Space Agency on multidisciplinary research studying early life on Earth and the prospects of life existing or having existed on Mars or elsewhere in the solar system. Astrobiology is a relatively new field of study at the crossroads of astronomy, biology, geology, paleontology, physics and other disciplines.
AWARDS
POORNIMA MADHAVAN, assistant professor of psychology, among 30 individuals nationwide who were identified as a "future leader in scientific policy making" by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In November, she and the other future leaders - selected from academia, government and industry - will take part in a weeklong Leadership Seminar in Science & Technology Policy seminar on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., conducted by the AAAS and the White House.
LEE SMITH, adjunct faculty member, communication and theatre arts, and KATHERINE HAMMOND, director of theatre and assistant professor of communication and theatre arts: Their play, "aDreamPlay," written and directed by Smith with media direction by Hammond, was invited to two juried theatre festivals - the Wilmington Fringe in September and the Fringe Festival in November. Their production received one of the 30 slots, out of 160 applicants, for the Fringe Festival.
ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering, the first-ever Technical Merit Award by the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization. SISO is an international organization dedicated to the promotion of modeling and simulation interoperability and reuse for a broad range of M&S clients.
EXHIBITIONS
JOHN ROTH, assistant professor of art, a solo exhibition of his sculpture, "Conveyance and Movement," at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia in Virginia Beach. The exhibition opened Sept. 16 and continues through Jan. 16.
