Richard Keplar, Retired associate professor emeritus of engineering technology, Dies

Richard K. Keplar, of Virginia Beach, associate professor emeritus of engineering technology at Old Dominion University, died May 31, 2010. He was 71.

Keplar joined the ODU faculty in 1979 and retired in 2007. Among the courses he taught were Structural Analysis I and II, Structural Laboratory, Beginning and Advanced Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology Laboratory, Materials of Construction Systems, and Soil Mechanics and Foundations. He served on various university committees and represented the engineering technology department on the Faculty Senate.

He previously taught at Valparaiso University for four years and Bowling Green State University for seven years.

Keplar was instrumental in designing the columbarium at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He served as choir director for 12 years at Grace Lutheran Church in Chesapeake and four years at Shepherd of the Valley, Lutheran Church in Ohio.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Mauritta K. Keplar of Virginia Beach; two sons, Christopher Keplar and Eric Keplar of Norfolk; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of Keplar's life was held June 3 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
