APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
JOHN BRODERICK, president, appointed by Gov. Bob McDonnell to the Governor's Commission on Higher Education Reform, Innovation and Investment. The commission includes the presidents of seven other Virginia colleges and universities, as well as a number of business, education policy and government officials.
FRED DOBBS, professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, appointed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard to a committee to conduct a study that will significantly inform their efforts to derive environmentally protective numeric ballast water discharge limits in the next Vessel General Permit. The study will take into account estuarine and freshwater systems, including the Great Lakes and other inland navigable waters, as well as the waters of the three-mile territorial sea.
THOMAS SOCHA, University Professor of Communication, elected president of the Southern States Communication Association. This year, as SSCA vice president, he was the primary planner of the association's annual convention in Memphis, which turned out to be the largest convention in the association's 80-year history (757 presenters).

MALCOLM SCULLY, assistant professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, Faculty Early Career Development award from the National Science Foundation, which will support his innovative research of oxygen-depleted areas of the Chesapeake Bay.
