ODU Researchers to Serve as Panelists at Southeastern VA Biomedical Technology Partnership Forum

Three Old Dominion University researchers will serve on panels during the Southeastern Virginia Biomedical Technology Partnership Forum later this month.

The June 15 event at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News features panels on treatment technology, diagnosis technology, and biomedical modeling and simulation.

The treatment technology panel will include Richard Heller, ODU professor of medical laboratory and radiation sciences and director of the Frank Reidy Center for Bioelectrics. It will be moderated by Zohir Handy, the university's manager of technology licensing.

Heller will speak about the use of nanosecond ultrahigh voltage pulses for wound healing and other applications.

The modeling and simulation panel features two ODU faculty members. John Sokolowski, executive director of ODU's Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC), will discuss health care applications of modeling and simulation, and Mark Scerbo, professor of psychology, will speak about medical modeling and simulation tools such as the fetal heart rate monitor and Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE).

The forum has attracted participants from federal agencies such as NASA and the Jefferson Lab, and academic institutions including ODU, Hampton University and Eastern Virginia Medical School. The goal is to share information about biomedical technology and treatment, and demonstrate what related resources are available in southeastern Virginia.

In addition to the panel discussions, the forum will include a presentation on funding opportunities for biomedical technology research.
