Music On Monarch Way

The University Village will celebrate summer with Music On Monarch Way, a free concert series featuring an eclectic line-up of jazz, bluegrass, reggae, folk, salsa, blues, swing and progressive music.

Sponsored by the Old Dominion University Real Estate Foundation and The University Village, the concerts will be held from 5-7 p.m., June 26 though Aug. 21 on the green lawn behind the Ted Constant Convocation Center along Monarch Way on the Old Dominion campus. Admission and parking are free.

The concert schedule is as follows:

June 26 Julie Clark - Singer/Songwriter
Julie has stepped into the national spotlight as the 1st place winner of the Great American Song Contest, winner of the Kerrville New Folk Competition, winner of Best Audience Response at the Cornucopia Music Festival and grand prize winner of the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest.

July 3 Bobby BlackHat Band - Blues
Bobby "BlackHat" Walters, recording artist, harmonica player, vocalist, and songwriter, hails from Cleveland and has been playing harp for 30 years. Bobby plays the finest blues musicians in Hampton Roads to perform original, classic, and modern blues tunes.

July 10 Joe Gosman Band - Rock & Roll
Whether it is on a familiar street, a city festival, or at a local pub, the Joe Gosman Band is a catalyst for great times. You can find them singing original songs that reflect on life in the flavor of rock and roll.

July 17 The Gurleys - Americana/Acoustic
Bill Gurley is a well known multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Macon Gurley inherited her father's love of acoustic music and together they play a wide range of folk, bluegrass, blues and swing. Well known jazz bassist Jimmy Masters rounds out the trio for a fun and spontaneous evening of music.

July 24 TumbaoSalsero - Latin/Salsa
This Latin orchestra will keep your feet moving with full Latin percussion Salsa, Merengue, Son Montuno, Jazz, Bomba & Plena.

July 31 Jesse Chong - Eclectic Reggae, Funk & Rock
Jesse hails from Virginia Beach and has opened for a variety of bands from Steely Dan to Steel Pulse. He has performed for thousands of audiences and is known for his impeccable musicianship and compelling songwriting.

August 7 The Harwell Grice Band - Bluegrass
Delivering hard-driving bluegrass fresh from the mountains of Southwest Virginia, these talented young musicians have an amazing repertoire of traditional, cover and original music and have quickly become the most entertaining bluegrass act in the Commonwealth.

August 14 The Michael Clark Band featuring Tracy Clark - Rhythm & Blues/Soul/Rock
What started as a blues/rock guitar band evolved into an all-out R&B revue. Tracy Clark's vocals and stage presence coupled with one of the tightest rhythm sections in the area and one of the funkiest horn sections on the East Coast, provides all the elements for a great musical experience.

August 21 Session Rockers - Roots Reggae
Session Rockers is Hampton-based and a favorite band in Hampton Roads. They play all original music with elements of Jamaican roots and a combination of jazz, soul and reggae mixed together.
