Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament to Benefit Three Causes

Students in Old Dominion University's Sports Management program are organizing a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in April to benefit three local causes.

The event, Monarch Madness: Hoops for Hope, is being organized as a class assignment by students in instructor Gary Bernstein's event management/sport sponsorship class. The tournament will take place at ODU's Student Recreation Center from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 18.

The registration fee is $5 per player ($15 per team) with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and Jenna Salisbury, a cancer survivor currently suffering from severe complications. Additionally, all participants and spectators are asked to donate a non-perishable food item in support of the Salvation Army Food Bank.

The tournament is completely student run, providing students in the Event Management/Sport Sponsorship class an opportunity to gain hands-on experience running a fund-raising event.

To organize the event, the entire class has been broken into subcommittees, each performing different jobs for the overall event, such as finance, sponsorships, player recruitment, marketing and game-day operations.

Monarch Madness will also feature slam dunk, free-throw shooting and three-point shooting contests, with an additional $5 registration fee for each. Raffles will be held throughout the day as well to offer all participants an opportunity to win prizes.

Fliers and registration information can be obtained by e-mailing MonarchMadnessH4H@gmail.com. Those interested in participating can also see the Monarch Madness: Hoops for Hope event page on Facebook.
