Third Wave Feminist Amy Richards to Speak at Friends of Women's Studies Dinner Feb. 23

Amy Richards, author and spokeswoman for this generation's feminists, will be the guest speaker at Old Dominion University's annual Friends of Women's Studies Dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The program will begin with a reception and cash bar at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m., in the Ted Constant Convocation Center's Multipurpose Room. Richards' talk, "This Is What Feminism Looks Like," will address aspects of inner confidence and the outer manifestation of women and girls' strengths in a complex culture.

Richards, 39, is celebrating the updated edition of her 10-year-old book "Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future," co-authored with Jennifer Baumgardner. She and Baumgardner founded the grass-roots Third Wave Foundation for women between the ages of 18-30 in the 1990s, which has become a national platform for young feminists' issues and concerns.

She writes and edits "Ask Amy," a feminist advice column at www.feminism.com, and recently compiled her experiences as a parent of a young son in a new book, "Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself."
