Saturday Session Offers Assistance for Prospective Old Dominion University Students Seeking Federal Aid

College-bound Virginians seeking one-on-one assistance completing the federal financial aid form are invited to a session at Old Dominion University in 108 Rollins Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.

The session is one of 32 being conducted at colleges and universities statewide, an initiative of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and the Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (VASFAA).

Known as Super Saturday, the sessions will offer financial aid workshops and access to computers, so that financial aid experts can help students electronically submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The meetings will initiate the financial aid application process and help prospective students meet the priority filing date for most Virginia colleges, including ODU.

Two- and four-year colleges and universities and vocational schools across the country use the FAFSA to determine eligibility for student financial aid. Additionally, a $100 Book Scholarship will be awarded to one student at each Super Saturday location.

This event is open to parents and students of all grade levels, as well as adults interested in furthering their education.

For a list of materials that students must bring to receive assistance filling out the FAFSA, visit the VASFAA Web site at http://www.vasfaa.org/docs/training/SuperSaturday/2010SuperSaturday_Students.html.

For more information about ODU's Super Saturday session, call Lakeisha Phelps at 683-3645, or e-mail lphelps@odu.edu.

SCHEV is the coordinating body for Virginia's system of higher education, and is responsible for the certification of private and vocational schools. The agency provides policy guidance and budget recommendations to the governor and General Assembly, and is a resource for information about Virginia colleges and universities.

VASFAA is a nonprofit organization of individuals who are active in financial aid-related professions. Its mission is to promote the professional growth and collaboration of its members in order to serve the needs of students, families and institutions in matters related to financial and informational resources that support students' postsecondary education goals.
