APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS

MOUNIR LAROUSSI, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Laser and Plasma Engineering Institute, appointed to the international advisory board of the journal Plasma Processes & Polymers.

JONATHAN LEIB, associate professor of political science and geography, served as program chair for the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers in Knoxville.

SIMON SERFATY, professor of international studies and eminent scholar, served as chair of five Euro-Atlantic groups on "A Global Agenda for US-EU Dialogue in the 21st Century" (energy, climate change, reconstruction and stabilization, WMD proliferation and economic governance), a two-year effort completed in December 2009.

AWARDS

MOHAMMAD KARIM, vice president for research, elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, an honor bestowed each year on no more than one-tenth of 1 percent of the organization's voting membership throughout the world.

HUA LIU, assistant professor of political science and geography, the Shining Star Award from the ODU Division of Student Affairs.

GARY MORRISON, professor of instructional design and technology, had his book, "Designing Effective Instruction," citied as one of the most influential books in the field in a recent survey reported in Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (Nov. 11, 2009).
