Orchid Expert Speaking in Twilight Lecture Series

Carol Allen, a horticulturist who has worked at the United States Botanic Gardens in Washington, D.C., and taught classes and held seminars throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, will speak on "Native Orchids In and Out of the Garden," in the Twilight Lecture Series at Old Dominion University Tuesday, Feb. 9.

For 30 years, Allen has been an orchid hobbyist. She was manager of a retail orchid store in Laurel, Md., and also has developed special interests in integrated pest management, landscape design, native plants and tropical plants of many kinds.

She is author/editor of "North American Native Terrestrial Orchids: Propagation and Production," the proceedings of the 2006 North American Native Terrestrial Orchid Conference.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. in Room 101 of the Mills E. Godwin Life Sciences Building on the ODU campus. Parking is free in non-metered spaces of the 43rd Street garage.

ODU's Arthur and Phyllis Kaplan Orchid Conservatory, which is beside the Godwin Building, will be open for tours for 30 minutes before and after Allen's presentation.

The Tidewater Orchid society is a special sponsor of this event. The Twilight Lecture Series is a presentation of ODU and the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
