Office of Research Announces Support for Summer Projects
The Old Dominion University Office of Research will fund an eclectic grouping of summer 2010 research projects ranging from a scholarly look at how the music industry is changing to statistical modeling for DNA sequencing.
A total of 16 ODU faculty members will split $113,000 awarded via the office's Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP) and Summer Experience Enhancing Collaborative Research (SEECR) program. The researchers are from five ODU colleges, and to be eligible had to be full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members.
These programs are sponsored by the Office of Research in collaboration with the Faculty Senate.
Mohammad Karim, the ODU vice president for research, said the awards are made to promote scholarly endeavors and creative activities that will ultimately attract outside funding or result in important publications. Each award recipient will be expected to devote full time to his/her research for a continuous eight-week period during the summer.
SRFP focuses on new, inexperienced investigators, and more experienced investigators doing exploratory studies for which they have received no external funding to date.
SEECR is an intramural program that funds pilot projects involving collaboration of two faculty members from different colleges. The goal of the program is to inspire greater numbers of collaborations among faculty and to assist pairs of faculty in obtaining pilot data as background for submission of proposals to federal funding agencies.
