Education Prof Publishes New Textbook, 'Counseling Theory and Practice'

In his new book, "Counseling Theory and Practice," Edward Neukrug gives a unique, in-depth presentation of all the major theories of counseling and psychotherapy. A professor of counseling and human services at Old Dominion University, Neukrug focuses on 12 theories that cover four broad conceptual approaches in the text: psychodynamic, existential-humanistic, cognitive-behavioral and post-modern. Extensions, adaptations, and spinoffs to the theories are also discussed.

Each chapter provides a consistent framework to help students understand the theories and their applications, including extensive theorist biographies, the theory's view of human nature, key concepts, major techniques, the therapeutic process, social and cultural issues, and the efficacy of the theory.

In addition to theory content, "Counseling Theory and Practice" includes a survey that students can take electronically or by hard copy (in the book) to determine their theoretical orientation. Students can also read about a member of a fictitious family, "The Millers," who participate in the type of therapy discussed in the chapter.

Finally, "Counseling Theory and Practice" includes a DVD, "Theories in Action," that shows short clips of aspects of most of the theories covered in the text. Published by Brooks/Cole, the book effectively shows students how counseling theories are applied in real counseling settings.

Neukrug, who has taught at ODU since 1989, has also worked as a counselor at a crisis center, an outpatient therapist at a mental health center, an associate school psychologist, a school counselor, and as a private practice psychologist and licensed professional counselor.

Other books by Neukrug include: "The World of the Counselor," "Experiencing the World of the Counselor," "Essentials of Testing and Assessment," "Theory, Practice, and Trends in Human Services," "Skills and Tools for Today's Counselors and Psychotherapists," and "Skills and Techniques for Human Service Professionals."
