Shout It Out! Art as Activism Program Holds Student Exhibition This Saturday

The Old Dominion University art education program offered free classes this semester for students in grades 5-12 to educate the public on the impact artists can have on ecology, personal points of view, freedom of speech and expression.

The students' work will be displayed in an exhibition from 1 - 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in the Art Studio building located at 1028 46th Street and Monarch Way. A fashion show will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Parking is available in Lot 31 in front of the building. Street parking also is available.

Students who participated in the "Lights, Camera, Activist" course should bring their creations to the gallery by 3 p.m. for the fashion show. Parents and students may pick up their work at 4:30 p.m.

Pictured at right are students in the "Not Your Typical Art Class" session, who used non-traditional materials such as spray paint and stencils to create art in the style of street artists like Banksy and Margaret Kilgallen to promote their cause and "leave their mark" on a created cityscape. ODU students who served as instructors for this class were Liz Jett, Megan Varnell and Rachel Villorente.
