ODU's Geography Program Holds Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day Event Today

A presentation of the real world applications for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will be held in the James/Lynnhaven/York/Potomac Rivers rooms, Webb University Center, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7.

Sponsored by the geography honor society, Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Department of Political Science and Geography and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership, the event will include presentations by representatives from:

  • City of Norfolk
  • City of Virginia Beach
  • Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering
  • Fort Monroe
  • Michael Baker Corporation
  • NASA Langley Research Center
  • Old Dominion University
  • U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District

A rapid-growth technology area of cross-disciplinary interest, geographic information systems are computer systems specialized in the input, storage, spatial analysis and display of geographical features. The field is closely related to other high-tech fields, such as global positioning systems surveying, computer-aided design and database management systems.

GIS are used in a wide array of applications, including transportation and urban planning, engineering and computer-aided design, environmental science and management, and even crime analysis. Examples of GIS in action can be found in many media, particularly on the Internet with maps of neighborhoods, cities and real estate properties.

ODU faculty research in the area of GIS was featured recently in an article that appeared in The Virginian-Pilot.

Old Dominion University is Virginia's forward-focused, public doctoral research university, with more than 24,000 students and innovative and engaging teaching in 70 bachelor's, 60 master's and 36 doctoral degree programs.
