ODU's 'In Support of Children' Sponsors Lecture on Childhood Trauma Tonight
As part of Old Dominion University's In Support of Children Education Series, "It's Never OK to Hit a Child," Judith Lewis Herman, M.D., will offer a video presentation and discussion on the topic, "Experiencing Trauma in Childhood: Personal and Social Effects and What Individuals and Communities Can Do to Prevent It and Help Those Who Suffer."
The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb University Center.
Herman is clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and co-founder and director of training at the Victims of Violence Program at The Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. She received her medical degree at Harvard Medical School and her training in general and community psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center.
She is the author of two award-winning books: "Father-Daughter Incest" (Harvard University Press, 1981) and "Trauma and Recovery" (Basic Books, 1992). Herman has lectured widely on the subject of sexual and domestic violence, and is the recipient of the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and the 2000 Woman in Science Award from the American Medical Women's Association. In 2007 she was named a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Her book "Trauma and Recovery" was described as "one of the most important psychiatric works to be published since Freud" by Phyllis Chester in The New York Times Book Review. Lenore Walker, director of the Domestic Violence Institute, noted, "Herman's brilliant insights into the nature of trauma and the process of healing shine through in every page of this rich and compassionate book. Must reading for all who are concerned with this most crucial issue of our time."
