ODU's Hofmann to Speak Today at CCPO about Her International Ocean Studies

Eileen Hofmann, an Old Dominion University oceanographer who is taking a leadership role in some of today's most important global ocean studies, will speak about physical-biological coupling in marine ecosystems at a Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) seminar today.

The seminar will be at 3:30 p.m. in Room 3200 at CCPO headquarters in Innovation Research Park Building 1 in University Village on the eastern edge of the ODU campus. It is free and open to the public, as is the reception with refreshments that begins at 3 in the lounge outside the meeting room.

Concerns about global warming and climate change have focused attention on ocean studies in the past decade, and Hofmann has been involved in dozens of projects that explore the relationship between physical ocean characteristics-such as currents or water temperature-and marine life.

Hofmann has been involved with the Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics (GLOBEC) program through her memberships in the United States and international science steering committees and as chair of the Southern Ocean GLOBEC Program. She was recently appointed the next chair of the Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research Program of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program.

Her research interests, in addition to physical-biological interactions, include climate control of diseases of marine shellfish, descriptive physical oceanography and mathematical modeling of marine ecosystems. She is a professor in the ODU Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
