Navigating the Storm
The Nor'easter of November certainly wreaked havoc on much of Hampton Roads and, to some extent, the Old Dominion University campus.
There were some minor roof issues, leaks in a few buildings and property damage at the sailing center and tennis courts. As nearly all of you know, this, coupled with flooding throughout many nearby neighborhoods, forced us to close Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12-13.
As I look out the window today and see sunshine and blue skies, I must express my gratitude to so many who worked throughout the storm and over the weekend to ensure the safety and comfort of our students and to keep campus facilities functioning. While the grounds may not look as clean as they did for Homecoming, the campus looks dramatically better now than how it appeared Friday morning.
Singling people out for their hard work and accomplishments is dangerous because you run the risk of omitting someone, but I must acknowledge the leadership of Dillard George, Carole Henry, Michelle Falck, Rudy Burwell and Janet McLaughlin, and the work of their respective staffs, for how well we fared.
I often brag about our outstanding faculty and share stories about the achievements of our students and alumni. But today, let me make certain everyone on campus knows how fortunate we are to have so many talented and dedicated staff members who keep this university running smoothly.
For all who helped during the storm, thank you!
