Lawrence Hatab Next Speaker for 'Provost's Conversations On Teaching and Learning'

Lawrence Hatab, professor of philosophy and department chair, will be the next Old Dominion University faculty member featured in the "Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning" speaker series.

Hosted by Provost Carol Simpson, the Office of Distance Learning and the Center for Learning Technologies, the series features many of ODU's award-winning faculty members. Hatab's presentation, "Ways to Foster Critical Thinking," will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in room 1202 of the E.V. Williams Engineering and Computational Sciences Building. Faculty members are invited to attend any or all of the conversations.

Hatab's presentation will explore ways to foster critical thinking by focusing on the philosophy of critique, drawn from reflections on Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and will cover the Socratic vs. the lecture method.

"Conversations on Teaching and Learning" is designed to provide faculty members from across the campus with the opportunity to share, think and reflect on a wide range of teaching and learning issues, according to Simpson.

Hatab was appointed a University Professor for excellence in teaching at ODU in 2008 and received a State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award in 2009. Selected as an Eminent Scholar by the university, he is also a past recipient of the ODU Research Award and currently is the Louis I. Jaffe Professor in the College of Arts and Letters. He has published six books and more than 40 articles, mostly in Heidegger and Nietzsche studies.
