Giving Thanks...

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln officially proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday. Although the feast had been celebrated regularly since colonial times, it was the collective desire of the nation to formally observe a day where we give thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon us as individuals, communities, and humankind.

So, as folks across the country prepare to eat some 45 million turkeys, watch dozens of parades, and cheer for their favorite sports teams, I want to acknowledge some things for which I am most grateful:

• My Family: My wife, Kate, our three sons, daughter-in-law and grandchildren…Their unwavering support and love have enabled me to reach my highest goals and made each success more meaningful and gratifying. My life is rich beyond compare because of them.

• The Old Dominion Community: With representatives from countless cultures, more than 100 countries, and immeasurable life experiences, our students, faculty and staff teach me something new every day.

• The Members of ODU's Boards:  The time, talent and dedication of the many individuals who serve on the boards of the Research, Educational, Real Estate and Inter-Collegiate foundations and the devoted service and strong leadership of our Board of Visitors are integral in making Old Dominion the outstanding institution it is.

• The Hampton Roads Region: From the beautiful scenery and resource-rich metropolitan area to the strong-knit communities and supportive leaders, Hampton Roads is indeed among the best places to live in the country.

• My Colleagues: Those I work with at ODU, around the state and across the country are gifted, passionate and intelligent professionals who share their knowledge and assistance willingly and graciously.

From my family to yours, have a Happy Thanksgiving!
