Funeral is Nov. 7 for Eugene 'Gene' Walters, former BOV member

Former Old Dominion University Board of Visitors member Eugene "Gene" Walters, 86, of Virginia Beach, died Nov. 4, 2009, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He served on the ODU board from 1982-89.

A native of Vincennes, Ind., Walters was the CEO emeritus of the Farm Fresh supermarket chain. He was president of the National Grocers Association and was on the board of directors of the Food Marketing Institute. He was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, and served on the board of directors of SunTrust Bank.

Walters is survived by his wife of 65 years, Juanita Walters; his two daughters, Barbara Walters Doehrman of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Linda Walters Croker of Alexandria, Va.; his sister, Rose Marie Mitchell of Inman, S.C.; three grandchildren, Kelly Hering of Oak Hill, Va., Amy Cordier of Rockville, Md., and Thomas Croker Jr. of Alexandria; and three great-grandchildren, Alan Hering Jr., Abbi Hering and Annie Hering.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in Thalia Lynn Baptist Church with Prentis McGoldrick officiating. The burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, today, Nov. 6, from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
