Final Performances of 'Dracula' This Week at University Theatre
Out of the darkness, HE comes. Count Dracula! Bloodthirsty vampires fill this chilling tale about a young Englishman's confrontation with the King of Vampires, which opened Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Old Dominion University Theatre.
Originally dramatized by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston from Bram Stoker's world-famous novel, "Dracula," this horror romance stage play is performed in an adaptation by William McNulty and directed by ODU's theater program director, Katherine Hammond.
Set in England, the play follows Professor Van Helsing and his brave comrades, who must hunt down and destroy the profoundly evil Count Dracula. But the count is exceedingly resourceful, employing superhuman strength, psychic powers and shape changing to confound and frustrate his antagonists. Culminating in a wild and shocking confrontation between the King of Vampires and those who would rid the world of him, this adaptation is an action-packed, blood-soaked retelling of Bram Stoker's classic tale of horror.
Be advised: It's not for the faint of heart. The play contains "blood," fog effects, gunshots and strobe lights. It is not recommended for children under age 11.
Tickets, $10 for students and $15 for general admission, may be purchased in advance at the Arts and Letters box office, located in the University Theatre lobby, or by calling 683-5305. The box office is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets also are available at the door one hour before each performance.
The University Theatre is located on Hampton Boulevard between 46th and 47th streets. Free parking is available in the 45th Street garage. Metered street parking is also available.
