APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS

JOHN BRODERICK, president, named to the board of trustees for Physicians for Peace. He is one of eight new members joining the board of the Norfolk-based international nonprofit organization that focuses on medical education in the developing world.

AWARDS

ADOLPHUS HAILSTORK, professor of music, a 2009-10 ASCAPLUS award in the Concert Music Division from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

RANDALL SPAIN (Ph.D. '09), human factors psychology, and JAMES BLISS, associate professor of psychology, an award for the third best paper in the nation from the Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making Technical Group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society for a paper detailing their research on confidence and trust behaviors during the use of automation expertise for weapons systems.

PAPERS/PRESENTATIONS

JOHN ADAM, University Professor of mathematics, "'Waves' of Healing, the Critical Size Defect and Keloid Scars: Some Speculation at the Delft Symposium on Mathematical Models for Wound Healing," Technical University of Delft, Netherlands. Also, "A Mathematical Nature Walk" to the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Midlothian, Va.

ROBERT ASH, professor of aerospace engineering, "A Fixed Mars Base for Accelerated Exploration" at the Space 2009 Conference in Pasadena, Calif. Co-authors are Warren Dowler of Brookings, Ore., and Giulio Varsi of Port Washington, N.Y. He also was a panelist in a discussion of "ISRU Benefits to Exploration and Earth," along with Robert Wegeng, chief engineer for Battelle Memorial Institute, Richland Wash., and Dale Boucher, chief technologist for NORCAT (a Canadian mining company), Sudbury, Ontario.

GARRETT MCAULIFFE, University Professor of counseling, a national webinar, "How to Teach Multicultural Counseling," to counselor educators and doctoral students across the United States.

SEAN POTTER, aerospace engineering graduate student, "Mars CO2 Powered ISRU Propulsion System" at the Space 2009 Conference in Pasadena, Calif. Co-authors are ERIN BLASS and BONNEY MCJUNKIN, aerospace engineering graduate students, and ROBERT ASH, professor of aerospace engineering.

SONIA YACO, special collections librarian and university archivist, a paper about ODU's Desegregation of Virginia Education (DOVE) Project, which she co-chairs. Her paper was part of a panel, "Meeting the Challenge: Documenting Under-represented Communities and Topics Through Cooperative Collecting," at the annual conference of Society of American Archivists.
