M.F.A. Students Continue to Garner Awards and Recognition

Students from Old Dominion University's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program are receiving praise and recognition for their recent works.

The essay "Edges," written by Andrea Nolan, a 2009 graduate of the fiction program, was listed as one of the top 100 notable essays in "Best American Essays 2009," edited by Mary Oliver. Nolan's essay was published previously in the fall 2008 edition of The Potomac Review.

The essay "Moonlight," written by Joanna Eleftheriou, a 2007 graduate of the nonfiction program, will appear in the 2010 issue of the Chautauqua literary journal.

"Hail Marys," a short story by Claudia Isler Mazur, third-year fiction student, has been published in "Scribblers on the Roof," a forum for Jewish fiction and poetry. Read her story here.

Old Dominion's M.F.A. program, which began in 1994 with 12 students and three faculty members, now includes an average of 25-35 students each semester who work with the program's talented seven-member creative writing faculty in fiction, poetry and nonfiction.

The M.F.A. faculty - Michael Blumenthal, Luisa Igloria, John McManus, Michael Pearson, Janet Peery, Sheri Reynolds and Tim Seibles - have published many highly acclaimed books. Igloria currently serves as the graduate program director.
