Shaomin Li to Kick Off New Speaker Series

Old Dominion University Provost Carol Simpson and the Center for Learning Technologies will kick off a new speaker series, "Provost's Conversations on Teaching and Learning," Tuesday, Oct. 6. Faculty members are invited to attend any or all of the conversations.

The series, which will feature many of ODU's award-winning faculty members, opens with a presentation by Shaomin Li from the College of Business and Public Administration's economics department. It will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Burgess Room (9024) of the Batten Arts and Letters Building.

"Conversations on Teaching and Learning" is designed to provide faculty members from across the campus with the opportunity to share, think and reflect on a wide range of teaching and learning issues, according to Simpson.

"Noting that one of our six strategic goals for 2009-2014 is to 'provide students with the tools to succeed,' we are working, as always, toward a pedagogy that fosters creative learning, encourages student independence and enables inspiring teaching," said Simpson. "To that end, this series of conversations affords our award-winning faculty the chance to share the philosophies and techniques behind their strong teaching practices, and it offers all of the rest of us a chance to consider, and discuss, our own successful experiences with students, both in and out of the classroom."

Li is the E.V. Williams Fellow and professor of international business. He teaches undergraduates and graduate students, and has taught executives in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and the United States. His research has been featured in The Economist, Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. He also has appeared on CNN, Fox News and BBC. He has advised the United Nations, Fidelity Investments and Johnson & Johnson.

Li received his doctorate from Princeton University, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. He received the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award in 2008.
