Services are Sept. 24 for Professor Emeritus Charles Jackson

Charles W. Jackson, professor emeritus of exercise science, sport, physical education and recreation, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009. A resident of Norfolk, he was 71.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Jackson joined the Old Dominion University faculty in 1962 and was promoted to full professor in 1978. He retired in 1999.

At various times during his ODU career, he served as director of intramural sports, swimming coach and coordinator of lifetime sports.

A native of Norfolk, Jackson retired as lieutenant colonel in 1993. He was a member of Optimist International and American Legion Post 35.

Survivors include his wife, Christina W. Jackson; two daughters, Grace Kirchgessner and Charlotte White, both of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four grandchildren, Max and Olivia Poteat, Aja and Kai White, all of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and two sisters, Ruth Biggs of Williamston, N.C., and Frances McClendon of Chesapeake.
