APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS

GARY EDGERTON, professor and chair of communication and theatre arts, appointed to the editorial advisory board of Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media.

VISHNU LAKDAWALA, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, elected chair of the Hampton Roads Sanitation District Commission. Lakdawala, who recently completed the final year of his second four-year appointment as an HRSD commissioner, will serve as chair until June 30, 2010.

GUANG LEA LEE, associate professor of reading education, elected to the board of directors of the Northampton County Education Foundation Inc.

DEBRA MAJOR, professor of psychology, elected to the governing council of the American Psychological Association representing the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. She will serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1.

WILLIAM OWINGS, professor of educational leadership and counseling, appointed editor of The Journal for Effective Schools, a national refereed journal published twice a year.

ARACELI SUZARA, director, Filipino American Student Cultural Center, appointed to the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast's board of directors in March 2009.

AWARDS

MOHAMAD ALKADRY, associate professor of urban studies and public administration, named the 2009 Khi V. Thai Public Procurement Research Scholar of the Year by the Public Procurement Research Center.

JOHN BRODERICK, president, the Julian F. Hirst Award from Lead Hampton Roads. The award recognizes LHR graduates who exemplify excellence in community, civic and professional leadership.

DENNIS DARBY, professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, a "Best Paper" award as co-author of "210Pb-226Ra-230Th Systematics in Very Low Sedimentation Rate Sediments from the Mendeleev Ridge (Arctic Ocean)" in the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 2008. The authors are: Christelle Not, Claude Hillaire-Marcel, Bassam Ghaleb, Leonid Polyak and Darby.

MICHELE DARBY, eminent scholar of dental hygiene and graduate program director for the Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene, a Fulbright Scholar award to teach, train and conduct research at Jordan University of Science and Technology from Jan. 1 to May 15, 2010.

TIMOTHY MOTLEY, J. Robert Stiffler Professor of Botany, an award from the Botanical Society of America for recruiting the most members to the society over the past year.

PETER SCHULMAN, associate professor of French and international studies, named

Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French Educational Ministry. The honor goes to outstanding teachers and professors.

JAMES SWEENEY, associate professor of history, the Richard Slatten Award for Excellence in Virginia Biography, presented by the Virginia Historical Society, as editor of "Race, Reason, and Massive Resistance: The Diary of David J. Mays, 1954-1958" (University of Georgia Press). The annual award includes a $1,000 cash prize.

SUZAN THOMPSON, visiting assistant professor of counseling and human services, a certificate of excellence from the Norfolk Community Services Board "for her unwavering support and commitment in the oversight and implementation of the Outpatient Counseling Center in partnership with Old Dominion University."

QI "HARRY" ZHANG, assistant professor of community and environmental health, a "Best Published Research Article of the Year Award" from the Society of General Internal Medicine for an article he co-authored, "The Effect of Comorbid Illness and Functional Status on the Expected Benefits of Intensive Glucose Control in Older Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Decision Analysis." It appeared last year in Annals of Internal Medicine of the American College of Physicians. Elbert Huang, a medical doctor and researcher at the University of Chicago, is the first author and Zhang is the second author. Three other researchers also contributed to the article.

MICHAEL BLUMENTHAL, Mina Hohenberg Darden Chair in Creative Writing, a volume of poetry, "And" (BOA Editions, May 2009).

JEFFREY JONES, associate professor of communication, co-editor of "Satire TV: Politics and Comedy in the Post-Network Era" (NYU Press, 2009). The editors are: Jonathan Gray, Jones and Ethan Thompson. Jones also co-wrote the book's opening essay and contributed another essay.

TATYANA LOBOVA, visiting assistant professor of biological sciences and a researcher with the Kaplan Orchid Conservatory, lead author of "Seed Dispersal by Bats in the Neotropics" (New York Botanical Garden Press). The co-authors are: Cullen Geiselman, joint doctoral student at Columbia University and the Institute of Systemic Botany at the NYBG, and Scott Mori, the Nathaniel Lord Britton Curator of Botany at the Institute of Systematic Botany.

SONIA YACO, special collections librarian and university archivist, a paper about ODU's Desegregation of Virginia Education (DOVE) Project, which she co-chairs, at the annual conference of the Society of American Archivists. Her paper was part of a panel, "Meeting the Challenge: Documenting Under-represented Communities and Topics Through Cooperative Collecting."

PERFORMANCES

PETER SCHULMAN, associate professor of French and international studies, was executive producer of the play "LOST," by Arnold Schulman, which was performed at the Looking Glass Theater in New York City by the Haberdasher Theatre Company May 7-16.
