ODU Economics Club of Hampton Roads Announces 2009-10 Speakers Schedule

The Old Dominion University Economics Club of Hampton Roads has announced its 2009-10 luncheon speaker series schedule and new board members for the upcoming year.

Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, will continue to serve as chairperson of the club; Colin McKinnon entrepreneurial commercial real estate developer and manager serves as the new president, Irvine Hill, retired Cox Communications vice president of public affairs and community programming, serves as president emeritus; and Bruce Rubin, associate professor of finance and director of ODU's Master of Business Administration Program, serves as executive director and treasurer.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion's College of Business and Public Administration, the monthly luncheons begin at noon and cost $35 for nonmembers. Unless otherwise announced, the luncheons will be held at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside Hotel in downtown Norfolk. Due to limited space, reservations are required for all luncheons and can be made by calling 683-5138.

The schedule is as follows:

September 16 - Michael M. Dudley, President and CEO of Optima Health Plan and a Senior Vice President of Sentara Healthcare. Mr. Dudley has served as president of Kaiser Permanente Insurance Company, president of the Northeast Region of Kaiser Permanente in Hartford Connecticut, and president of Kaiser's Vallejo Medical Center in California and as a director on the Boards of America's Health Insurance Plans- the nation's principal association of health plans and insurance companies

October 28 - Freeman A. Hrabowski, III: President, University of Maryland, Baltimore, a consultant to the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Academies, and universities and school systems nationally. He also serves on the boards of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, France-Merrick Foundation, Marguerite Casey Foundation (Chair), and The Urban Institute. This program will be presented jointly with the Norfolk Foundation.

November 10 - General James N. Mattis: U.S. Marine Corps, NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation and Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command. Both support current operations while shaping NATO and U.S. forces for the future. This program will be presented jointly with the Hampton Roads Council of the Navy League

December 9 - Dennis Gartman: Author of The Gartman Letter, an investment advisory newsletter. He is also a frequent guest expert on television news including CNBC, MSNBC.

January 27 - Economic Forecasting Luncheon Forecasts by the ODU Forecasting Team of Professors Yochum, Agarwal and Najand, and Economy.com

February 18 - Third Annual Economic Impact Award

This year's recipient is Elizabeth "Betsy" Duke - Governor of the Federal Reserve Board. Governor Duke is an alumnus of the ODU MBA program and a former Hampton Roads banking executive. (Evening event at the Waterside Marriot)

March 17 - Jake Glover: director, Health and Wellness Initiatives America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). The program will be presented jointly with the Virginia Business Coalition on Health

April 28 - Paul Steneski: Ph.D., head of Derivatives Solutions & Training, Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC.
