Message to the ODU Community from President Broderick on the 9/11 Anniversary

Today our nation will solemnly observe the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

We especially remember former Old Dominion University students Craig Amundson, Robert Elseth and Lt. Col. Karen Wagner, and the relatives of former ODU students Shaun Mason, Tamatha Patterson, Jennifer Strauss and Jonathan Saporta, who lost their lives in the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks.

While the memory of that terrible day will forever remain fresh in our minds, we at Old Dominion University must join together with the nation in making this a "National Day of Service and Remembrance" and give of ourselves to serve the greater good.

I encourage each of you to take a moment to remember the victims and their loved ones; to remember the heroes of that day and their selfless acts of courage. Stop by the Remembrance Tree in the front lobby of Webb University Center today. Sign up to participate in the activities sponsored by the Center for Service and Civic Engagement throughout the year.

We have an opportunity to meld our academic pursuits with the richness of a multicultural university and thereby become effective contributors to positive social change, not only in our campus community but in the broader global community as well.

Please take a moment today to reflect on how you can be an agent of change and of service.

Sincerely yours,

John R. Broderick
President
