Letter to ODU Students with Updates on H1N1 Flu

Letter to ODU Students with Updates on H1N1 Flu

This message is intended to keep you informed with the latest news regarding cases of the novel H1N1 Influenza A virus at Old Dominion University and to remind you of the necessary precautions you should take to prevent the further spread of the disease.

Since the beginning of the semester, the Yon Student Health Services Center has seen occasional cases of students with influenza-like illness (ILI). A few students were affected over the summer as well. This week there has been a moderate increase in the number of ILI cases in both on- and off-campus students.

To contain the flu as much as possible, it is important that you:

  • Cover your cough with a tissue or cough into your upper sleeve.
  • Wash your hands often. Carry alcohol-based hand cleanser with you and use it often.
  • Don't share drinking glasses, eating utensils, pillows or smoking materials.
  • Reduce germs on surfaces touched often by wiping down your telephone, keyboard, doorknobs and surfaces, such as desks and bathrooms, regularly. Any household cleaner or wipe is effective.

If you are sick with fever or flu-like symptoms, it is very important that you avoid attending any large public gatherings, such as sporting events, concerts or social events. This will help to prevent the spreading of the illness to others.

This slide show from the Student Health Services website provides important information about what to do if you are sick: http://studentaffairs.odu.edu/healthservices/images/H1N1STUDENT.pdf.

We anticipate receiving doses of the H1N1 vaccine in late October and seasonal flu vaccines are available now. Information about flu shot clinics is available here:
