F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series Opens

The 2009-10 F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series and Residency Programs will open on Monday, Sept. 21, with two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated Karrin Allyson, joined by the John Toomey Trio. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Allyson has spent the last fifteen years carving out an impressive career as a singer, songwriter, pianist, composer and bandleader. She has recorded eleven CDs for Concord Records, each of which has showcased her astonishing breadth of repertoire, from standards by Gershwin and Porter to Brazilian bossa nova to samba and Thelonious Monk.

Her most recent release, "Imagina: Songs of Brazil," is a collection of 14 tracks featuring songs sung in Portuguese, as well as Brazilian songs with English translations.

"Whatever your native language," Allyson says, "I hope that these songs speak directly to your heart, as they have to mine."

In addition to the performance Monday evening, Allyson will offer a master class at 12:30 p.m. for students and invited guests in Chandler Recital Hall. Master classes are open to the general public to observe.

Tickets, $10 for students and $15 for general admission, may be purchased in advance at the Arts and Letters box office, located in the University Theatre lobby, or by calling 683-5305. The box office is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets also are available at the door one hour before each performance.

Parking for Diehn concerts is in the 49th Street Garage adjacent to Foreman Field or in the circular lot between the Performing Arts Center and Webb University Center.

An endowment established at The Norfolk Foundation, made possible by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. F. Ludwig Diehn, funds this program.
