President Broderick Announces Consultant Study for Athletics and Athletic Director Search Committee

Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick announced yesterday that the University has retained the services of Carr Sports Associates Inc. (CSA) to provide a management and operations assessment of the intercollegiate athletics program.

"I believe it is essential before we embark on a search for a new athletic director that we obtain an objective and thorough third-party assessment of our entire program," Broderick said."We have been blessed with Jim Jarrett's outstanding leadership for many years, but we owe it to our search process and interested candidates to have a comprehensive report outlining our strengths, opportunities and challenges. This will include everything from the programmatic and facilities to the financials. Once this is completed in late fall, we will begin to advertise for a new athletic director, with the goal of having someone available before Dr. Jarrett departs in June 2010."

CSA's credentials include a combined record of 80 years of athletics experience in campus leadership and consulting service roles and 15 years of experience in conducting reviews of athletics departments, developing feasibility studies and strategic plans for NCAA Division I athletics programs and conferences. In addition, the firm has vast knowledge of current events, trends and best practices of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics and an appreciation for the unique considerations of Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) public universities.

Bill Carr established CSA in 1997 and re-entered the executive search and management consulting industry as a major player. Carr had a strong record of creative and sustained success in 12 years combined as director of athletics at the University of Florida and University of Houston and five previous years as a well-known and respected athletics consultant.

CSA has recently provided consulting for many NCAA institutions, including the University of Richmond, George Mason University, Appalachian State University, the University of South Florida, the University of Illinois and Clemson.

Broderick also announced that former University President James Koch and Vice President Alonzo Brandon will spearhead the screening committee for the search process for an athletic director.

"I am pleased Dr. Koch and Mr. Brandon have agreed to coordinate the search process," Broderick said. "Dr. Koch has been in this role before and Vice President Brandon knows all too well the need to have resource development a priority for new leadership," he said.

Other members already accepting roles in the process include Board of Visitors members Marc Jacobson and Barry Kornblau, ODU Intercollegiate Foundation board member Carlton Bennett, senior associate athletic director Debbie White, athletic-faculty representative Dr. Janis Sanchez Hucles and Glenda Humphries, vice president for human resources. A representative from the student body and a former student athlete will also be added to the committee.
