Norfolk Community Services Board Honors Suzan Thompson

Suzan Thompson, research associate professor of counseling at Old Dominion University, recently received a certificate of excellence from Norfolk Community Services Board (NCSB) executive director Maureen Womack "for her unwavering support and commitment in the oversight and implementation of the Outpatient Counseling Center in partnership with Old Dominion University."

Thompson conceptualized and laid the groundwork for ODU's partnership with NCSB and the Outpatient Counseling Center that recently opened on Olney Road. After providing leadership for the university's partnership with the organization during the past four years, Thompson has turned over the coordination of the center to Danica Hays, the new counseling graduate program director in the Department of Counseling and Human Services.

The Outpatient Counseling Center employs three part-time counseling doctoral students who oversee the work of counseling graduate program practicum and internship students, who in turn provide affordable, high-quality counseling services at the center. Counseling sessions cover a wide range of issues, including anger management, depression, grief and loss, job loss, relationship conflicts, school problems and time management.

The NCSB provides treatment and rehabilitation services to more than 6,000 Norfolk residents, including those with mental health, mental retardation and substance addiction problems.
