Memorial Service Is Aug. 1 For Art Department's Carole Hubbard

Carole A. Hubbard, visiting associate professor of art education at Old Dominion University, died in her Norfolk home Tuesday, July 28, 2009. She was 73. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N. Main St., Suffolk.

Born in Pekin, Ill., Hubbard had lived in Hampton Roads for the past 36 years. She received her bachelor's degree from Ohio State University, her master's from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Ph.D. from Penn State.

Before joining the ODU faculty, she was the supervisor of arts for the Newport News Public Schools and taught at Hampton University. She began her career teaching in the Newport News and Hampton Public Schools for many years.

"After Carole Hubbard retired from the region's school system, she taught as an adjunct associate professor for our department for many years, handling the art education classes and the occasional art appreciation course," said Linda McGreevy, chair of the ODU art department. "She was an excellent instructor, beloved by her students, and a loquacious, involved colleague.

"She and her husband usually took trips to Europe in the summer, and often involved our faculty and staff in these jaunts. Carole attended conferences in her field every year, and often gave papers and presentations, keeping the name of Old Dominion University in the forefront of the field. She is an irreplaceable member of our team, and we regret her passing," McGreevy added.

Hubbard was a member of Suffolk Christian Church, the National Arts Association, the Virginia Arts Association and the Tidewater Arts Association.

She is survived by her husband, Leroy Hubbard; her daughters, Lisa Stern of Newport News, Michelle Bowman of Cocoa, Fla., and Nicole Smith of Suffolk; three grandchildren; her sister, Mary Lou Tosi of Pekin, Ill.; and by Robert Hecker of Newport News, the father of her children.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peninsula Fine Arts Center, 101 Museum Drive, Newport News, VA 23606.
