ODU's Broderick to Receive Award from Lead Hampton Roads

Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick will receive the Julian F. Hirst Award at a celebration dinner and ceremony on June 18. The annual award, presented by Lead Hampton Roads, recognizes LHR graduates who exemplify excellence in community, civic and professional leadership.

Lead Hampton Roads is an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the region by strengthening leadership through education, partnerships and networking across traditional boundaries.

As president of ODU, Broderick guides the university's six colleges, more than 10 economic development and research centers, and numerous partnerships with government and business organizations and agencies. He oversees an operating budget of $411.6 million and more than 2,500 faculty and staff members.

Prior to being named president in May 2009, Broderick served as acting president for one year, and previously was vice president for institutional advancement and admissions and chief of staff to the president. In addition to his administrative duties, Broderick annually teaches graduate courses in the Darden College of Education.

He has been recognized for his contributions to higher education with the College Communicators Association Distinguished Service Award, and was a finalist for the national PR News' Professional of the Year Award. He recently received the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Humanitarian Award and the Urban League of Hampton Roads' Marian Palmer Capps Award.
