Former College of Arts and Letters Dean Appointed President of Brooklyn College

Karen L. Gould, the former dean of Old Dominion University's College of Arts and Letters, has been named president of Brooklyn College, of the City University of New York.

Gould, who served as dean of ODU's College of Arts and Letters from 1996 to 2001, comes to Brooklyn College from California State University, Long Beach, where she served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

The appointment, effective Aug. 15, was made at the recommendation of Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, following a nationwide search for a successor to President Christoph M. Kimmich.

Gould is a world-renowned scholar in French-Canadian literature, having written six books and countless essays and articles on the subject. She received a B.A., cum laude, from Occidental College in 1970, a diploma from the Sorbonne and a Ph.D. in romance languages from the University of Oregon in 1975.

In addition to her time at Old Dominion, Gould has served as dean of McMicken College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Cincinnati, and has held tenured faculty positions at Bowling Green State University, Virginia Tech and Bucknell University.

Established in 1930, the same year as ODU, Brooklyn College has an enrollment of 13,000 undergraduate and 3,700 graduate students.
