ODU Co-Sponsors Physicians for Peace Symposium on Global Healthcare

Old Dominion University will co-sponsor a symposium hosted by Physicians for Peace which will focus on global healthcare issues. The forum, titled "Collaborative and Sustainable Health Care in the Developing World" will be held Friday, May 15 in the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center at Norfolk State University.

The forum will examine the challenges and opportunities for health care organizations to collaborate and create sustainable, replicable and effective health care. It will discuss delivery models for supporting and expanding existing public health infrastructure to more effectively serve the most impoverished populations worldwide. Panelists will include representatives from a range of hospitals and medical schools, as well as prominent global health care experts from Haiti and Africa.

Global health expert and humanitarian, Dr. Paul Farmer will be the keynote speaker at the forum. Farmer, an infectious disease physician, anthropologist and health expert is founding director of Partners in Health, an organization that works with poor communities worldwide to fight disease and poverty.

His work was the subject of Tracy Kidder's best-selling 2003 book, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World.

Physicians for Peace was founded in 1989 and is dedicated to the ideal that health care in the developing world can best be improved by providing training and education to health care professionals in those countries. The organization sends volunteer medical professional overseas to train their "in-country" peers, who then use their training to serve patients in the world's most underserved populations.
