Final Day for ODU Food Bank Drive

Old Dominion University is holding a four-day, university-wide food drive to support the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia Tuesday, April 28 through Friday, May 1, at multiple locations on the university's Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Peninsula and Tri-Cities campuses.

"This is a critical time for food banks. With a bad economy and rising unemployment rates, the need for food bank services is higher than ever," said Acting President John R. Broderick. "One of our marks of distinction at Old Dominion is teaching, research and community outreach initiatives that create innovative solutions to real-world problems. I can't think of anything more real or pressing than helping to end hunger in our community."

According to a recent release by the Virginia Employment Commission, the Hampton Roads region's unemployment rate was 7.2 percent in February, the most recent month for which statistics were available.

The top items that are especially needed include peanut butter, chunky soups, canned meats, canned tuna, canned vegetables, juice, cereal, macaroni and cheese, pasta and pasta sauces. Volunteers will also be accepting monetary donations. According to the Food Bank's web site, just 29 cents can provide a meal to someone in need.

Collection sites will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the entrances of the following locations:

  • Batten Arts and Letters Building
  • Recreation Center
  • Rollins Hall
  • University Bookstore
  • Webb University Center
  • All Residence Halls
  • Garage B - 43rd Street and Elkhorn Avenue
  • Garage D - 45th Street across from the Constant Center
  • Garage E - 49th Street by Foreman Field
  • Virginia Beach Higher Education Center
  • Peninsula Higher Education Center
  • Tri-Cities Higher Education Center.
