Shipbuilding and Repair Career Day Today

Old Dominion University's Lean Institute will hold a "Shipbuilding and Repair Career Day" Tuesday, March 24, to expose students to possible careers in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry.

The event is being organized to develop the workforce in the area, by raising awareness among middle and high school students about shipbuilding and repair jobs.

With an aging workforce in the shipbuilding/repair industry, companies say there are careers available, which pay between $35,000 and $95,000 per year, or more.

Local industry partners will attend the event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Included on the program are shipyard tours, an industry expo and hands-on activities like drilling, pipefitting and welding.

Students will also have an opportunity to hear from ODU alumni working in the marine industry.

Each student will receive a hard hat for participating in the career day. Additional information can be found at the event Web site: http://www.lions.odu.edu/~averma/sbrcd/StudentHomeIndex09.html.
